Attractively painted composition depicting Hachimantaro, a Minamoto clan samurai of the late Heian period. The image of the warlord is mounted on cream-coloured silk with floral patterns. For an accent, a different pattern can be found above and above his image. At the top and the bottom, light purple brocade silk has been carefully picked to complement all the colours- ivory, red, black and white. At the end of the scroll, the black-end bottom roller is decorated with golden details.
Hachiman Taro/ Minamoto no Yoshiie, a man who came to embody the spirit of the samurai and a legend even in his own time, was the son of Minamoto Yoriyoshi. Hachiman Taro became something of a paragon of samurai skill and bravery.
